CRICKET: MAKESHIFT OPENER DILSHAN SEALS THE DAY FOR SL

Venue: Canberra
Event : 5th ODI CB series SL vs Ind
Result: SL takes the honours thanks to DL method

The lesser the number of overs the more unpredictable a match becomes. On a day when rain and sunshine played hide and seek alternatingly, India batted first and posted what seemed to be a good total of 195 in 29 overs thanks mainly to rookie Rohit Sharma. But then the DL method came into play making it a comparatively easier 154 from 21 overs for SL.

Jayawardene pulled a rabbit out of the hat when he sent Dilshan to open the innings with veteran Jayasuriya and the 2 went on to make hay while the sun shined. Sreesanth especially suffered against Jayasuriya. He went for 48 off his 3 overs- the momentum shift was vivid. But at the other end Ishant was good, though finally his figures read 26 off 4 overs. He claimed the crucial wicket of Jayasuriya.

But Dilshan was in no mood to relent. With Jayawardee rotating the strike, Dilshan found the ropes frequently. Only Harbhajan commanded some respect from the SL batting. The SL finally won with 2 overs to spare.

Earlier Sehwag departed early as usual. Sachin and Gambhir built up a good partnership. Gambhir is definitely becoming more reliable nowadays. But Gambhir was run out on 35 while Sachin departed for a well made 32. once again it was left to Dhoni and Sharma to repair the damage and once again the duo responded. Sharma was fluent playing cautiously at the start and later throwing caution to the winds. His 70 off 64 balls along with Dhoni’s effort meant India were placed at a comfortable 195. But the bowlers flattered to deceive.
