CRICKET: KIWIS ROMP HOME WITH 6 WICKETS TO SPARE

Venue: Wellington
Event : 1st ODI Eng vs NZ
Result: 3 Run outs spell dooms day for England

A disciplined bowling effort and a marvelous fielding effort helped Kiwis to shatter England’s dream for a victory in the first ODI at Wellington today. On a sluggish surface, England chose to bat, a decision that did not augur well for them considering the paltry total they posted.

England were never in command from the moment they stepped onto the field. Their openers couldn’t take the attack to the opposition and soon Alastair Cook was castled by Chris Martin. Kyle Mills and Martin maintained a steady line and length. To add to the batsman’s woe the pitch did not encourage stroke play and the outfield was slow. Even Kevin Pietersen couldn’t get going. He was bowled by Oram. England was reduced to 67 for 4. The onus was on Collingwood and Owais Shah.

That’s when disaster struck. Collingwood struck one to mid on and called for a quick single. But Shah didn’t respond. Collingwood was run out by a mile. It was followed by the run outs of Swann and Shah himself. England were staring down the barrel with a score of just 130.Only wicket keeper Mustard managed to reach a decent score. A patient 31 runs though not a very convincing display.

England was relying on SideBottom and Anderson to provide them the early breakthroughs. However Kiwi openers Raider and Mc cullum made sure that there were no jitters in the Dressing room with a opening stand of 61. The match was almost over when Sidebottom and Broad struck off successive overs. Nevertheless the Kiwis completed a fine win to boost their chances in a 5 match series.
