CRICKET: AN ENCORE IN BRISBANE

Venue: Brisbane
Event : 2nd ODI of CB series India vs Sri Lanka
Result: Weather gods lead 2-0

Two down and no wins to show yet. The Indian team could feel down in the dumps. They fought back in the last match against the Aussies; posted a good total against the Lankans; yet they haven’t got their just dessert. Rains seem to lash whenever India is in a position of strength.

For the second time in as many occasions India batted first. The dashing duo of Sehwag and Sachin lived upto their names. Viru in his usual style and Sachin with his recently regained youthfulness blazed away on a track which offered true bounce. A towering six from Sehwag stood out. Soon Sachin played on to the stumps (a dismissal that we are getting pretty used to in recent times) off Malinga and Sehwag followed him. The middle order let India down again.

Yuvraj back from an injury was expected to lend some stability to the middle order but failed to trouble the scorers, edging one to the slips off Murali. He is definitely experiencing a nightmare down under. New find Rohit Sharma suffered from a raw decision for caught behind. Then it was an Indian show throughout.

Gambhir and Dhoni came together when India was tottering at 86 for 4. and they left together leading India to a competitive total of 267. Gambhir made good use of a dropped catch when he was on 11-Sangakara being the culprit. He unleashed some crisp strokes enroute to his century. At the other end Dhoni played a captain’s knock, playing with utmost caution early on and later threw caution to the winds. A huge 6 over long on fetched him his half century. Gambhir reached his century in the ending stage of the match. The onslaught came in the last ten overs with more than 50 runs off the last 5 overs.
That was when rain intervened and washed out the match. ARRGH where are the indoor stadiums? Dhoni showed the crowd his football skills and Uthappa was entertaining them with a remote controlled car, as the Brisbane crowd went home disappointed.
