SUBRAMANYAPURAM – REALISTIC CINEMA TO THE CORE

Lately the Kollywood industry has been throwing up some good films which down plays the drama and gives reality a boost and Subramanyapuram seems to have taken a leaf out of that success formula. Even right at the beginning you would clearly know that this is one movie, which is going to underplay the technical aspects and focus more on reality.

It is a tale of a few young men whose lives go astray thanks to their loyalty to their close ones. Azhagar(Jai) and Paraman (sasi kumar) are two typical young men who are jobless and disobey their families. But they are loyal to Somu, an ex councilor and his brother Kanagan. Kasi(Kanja Karuppu), along with his friends, Azhagar and Paraman always get into minor scuffles with everyone around. Azhagar is in love with Somu’s daughter (Swathi). Special mention has to be made of her as she steals the show without speaking a single word. Azhagar and Paraman commit a murder for Kanagan who promises to save them from the Police but later they realize that he had betrayed them. That starts a sequence of murders by Azhagar and Paraman as they seek revenge.

The opening shots seem to be shot from a hand held camera just to breathe life into an ordinary scene to make it great. The movie starts off slowly and gradually you are bound to note the change in pace. The cast and the costumes are just right and not once does one feel that it is an overdose. Actually nothing in the movie is an overdose. With an almost completely fresh cast and a new face handling the music, Subramanyapuram does not have any stars to rely on. But it doesn’t need to. The new comers fir their roles perfectly and each of their roles prove to be a necessary element for the movie’s success. James Vasanthan has unveiled a talent that is going to take him a long way. The song ‘Kangal irandhaal’ is already a super hit.

But it is not all roses. The movie meanders at a very slow pace at times for the sake of reality. Some shots are way too slow, especially that of Kasi walking for a long time towards the end, a needless waste of time, just to make the viewer anxious to know what happened and there are many scenes like these. Even though the movie begins with a murder, the screen play does not set the pulse racing and you have to wait till the intermission to step into the actual crux of the story. The second half sets a reasonable pace, even though it is nothing unpredictable – old wine in an old bottle (1980s). But at the end one just feels that something is amiss. Subramanyapuram just fails to keep you tied down, as the movie takes its own time to get into full swing. Anyway it is definitely party time for realistic cinema lovers.

Now Bruce is back and he has succeeded to keep himself calm for a few months. The military is after him. The Hulk needs an able villain and in comes ‘The Abomination’ as ferocious as Hulk if not more and now Bruce has to change back to the Hulk and save the Earth from the Abomination. Dialogues take a back seat as the two monsters fight it out. Battle field Earth. The stunt scenes are truly breathtaking.

The incredible Hulk is here to stay. But one might pity the subcontinent audience as they have been forced to view only a brutally edited version of the movie with the distributors deciding to remove around 25 minutes of the movie. Nevertheless the movie is still a gripping one to watch and the Hulk might just keep you at the edge of your seats most of the time.

The ball was sailing across, covering a long distance, but just a bit short off the boundary, straight into the hands of a fielder who accepted it with glee, only to dash the hopes of millions, who were hoping for a Dhoni miracle. India’s miserable run in the finals against Pak continued.

How often have predictions gone wrong? How often cricket experts are made to eat their words? Cricket is truly unpredictable, especially the shorter formats of the game. On a cloudy Saturday night, India, staunch favorites for the title, was rudely awakened from their dreams, by a wounded Pakistan. They were brought back to level 0 from cloud nine. A beleaguered Pakistan had the last laugh.

Pakistan won a crucial toss, the best start for any final. Their batsmen applied themselves and managed a dramatic show. But it was not all roses. The openers were made to look scratchy by the consistency of Praveen and the pace of Ishant. Praveen once again was miserly (this is becoming a cliché). But Irfan leaked runs at the other end while Chawla had a poor day at the office. Younis chose the perfect occasion to get his form back. Pak kept the wickets intact for the final onslaught and made it past the 3oo mark.

The chase had a nightmarish start for India, Viru fell before u can bat an eyelid. But Gambhir and Rohit flourished. But it was not India’s day as wicket after wicket fell, everyone making brisk convincing starts. Gambhir once again put up a great show, a pity that he did not qualify for the man of the series. Yuvi took to his role, like Bees to honey. Cracking boundaries at will, he kept the score board ticking first with Pathan and then with Raina. But he left when he was most wanted.

That meant a huge burden was now on the cool head of Dhoni. Dhoni and Irfan stuck it out trying to get as close to the target as possible hoping for a final assault. The duo succeeded in their first target but Pathan departed soon leaving Dhoni in a tight spot. Now only a miracle could save India and Dhoni was the perfect man for a fairy tale finish, which was not to be.

The final was an acid test for the Indian youngsters which exposed their temperament. The Indians will grow stronger with this experience. After all, the batting line up didn’t feature the best batsman in the world; still the Indians have made an impact. Changing times indeed!

INDIA AVENGE WC DEBACLE

Revenge is sweet. That’s what most of the Indian cricket fans would be thinking. The wounds of the world cup drubbing at the hands of the Bangla tigers was still afresh and some of it would have healed yesterday. When India thrashed Bangladesh with a comprehensive victory, Pakistanis would have been relieved as this loss provides them the gate pass for the final show down against India on Saturday.

The Indian youths were upto the mark yet again on a good batting pitch. Making the Bangladesh tremble with accuracy and perseverance was Praveen Kumar, the emerging hero. He came up with yet another miserly spell and at one stage had given away just 8 runs off 7 overs. Have we found a replacement for Srinath? Time will tell.

Once again Bangladesh was in trouble with their openers doing nothing except to frighten the rest of the batsmen, making the pitch look like hell. Credit has to go to Praveen and Rp though. Chawla once again impressed with some sharp bowling. Ashraful the usually aggressive batsman was made to till hard for runs and as long as he was out there, it was a test match going on. Hasan managed to put in a decent show to save the blushes for the home team. But soon the Tigers ran out of gas.

Well the Indian chase was short and quick. The dashing duo of Gambhir and Viru were on song yet again. These two do play well together complementing each other and matching each other shot for shot. Gambhir is a much improved batsman mixing dare devil stuff along with some sharp singles and looks to be the light at the end of the tunnel for India, his 5th ODI hundred coming in quick time. Once Viru departed, Gauti began to open up and Rohit and Yuvi did their bit to match him. That meant an early end at the office.

The Indians are well set to claim the Kitply cup without much trouble. The youths are gelling well even in the absence of the seniors. Sachin Tendulkar would be a welcome addition to this sharp unit.

It was a total surrender by Pakistan. Batting first, the Indian openers Viru and Gambhir continued from where they left in the IPL. The duo looked fit and in form. Sharp singles stole the tooth away from the in form Pakistan Pacers Gul and Tanvir. They were helped on their way by some lackluster fielding by the Pakistanis. Three dropped catches in the first ten overs, Younis Khan being the main culprit, along with some sluggish fielding meant that India was already in the driver’s seat – a position that they didn’t relinquish till the end. Gambhir and Viru rode their luck and provided India a blistering start. Their good work was continued by the others. Yuvi accelerated towards the end and that meant India crossed 300. Sachin’s absence wasn’t felt and that is saying a lot.

Chasing a mammoth target, Pakistan crumbled like a pack of cards. Praveen Kumar managed another stand out performance with the ball while Ishant continued his magnificent run. Akmal and misbah flourished for a while before they fell prey to the thirst for quick runs. Akmal seemed to be stuck in the T20 mode, throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the ball. But his charge was short lived and there ended the flimsy Pakistani fight back. Chawla made merry while Malik was left ruing the missed opportunities. India was the better fielding side and that’s a pleasant change. The Youth brigade toppled the experienced Pakistani line up.

Remember those old Jackie Chan action flicks, wherein Chan plays a young man who trains under a martial arts Guru and then becomes a full fledged master and guns for vengeance? Kung Fu panda seems to take a leaf out of this book. But the similarities end right there. For, the lead is neither Chan nor Li. Actually; the lead is not even human. Nor is the subject of the tale as serious as the usual Kung Fu movies.

Kung fu panda stars, seemingly, the gentlest of all animals, the Panda. Po is a lazy, flabby, Panda who works in a noodle shop. He is a great fan of Kung fu. He idolizes the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey, and their guru Master Shifu. His wildest dreams come true, when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols. Enter the villain, Tai Lung a snow leopard, and the rest of the plot is along predictable lines. Po will have to play the savior.

With Mark Osborne, John Stevenson at the helm, the cast is quite strong with Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger have penned the story. Ultimately, this is a movie which could get kids hooked into kung fu.

IPL : JUDGEMENT DAY

This is it. It doesn’t get any bigger than this. The whole of the subcontinent has come to the state of a grinding halt. People of Chennai and Jaipur are frozen with anxiety even in this hot summer. Sunday will witness a battle royale pitting two of the best captains in the IPL head to head and the war field is Mumbai. It’s MSD vs Warne now. Two captains who think out of the box and keep their calm even in turbulent times.

Both the teams are of contrasting styles – probably Rajasthan is the more explosive of the two. Both teams have had very different path to the finals – Rajasthan has had a more flamboyant series while Chennai has been blowing hot and cold.

Chennai, the hot favorites during the early days of the tournament, lived up to their name in the first few matches, with Hayden and Hussey dismantling bowlers to all parts of the stadium. But they couldn’t find their feet once the overseas stars departed. Dhoni was not in the best of form. Fleming had to fill up the very large shoes of Hayden while the local lads were struggling to come to terms with their absence.

But soon Chennai found some stars in the form of Raina, Badrinath, Makhaya Ntini and Gony. Chennai, one has to admit is peaking at the right time with consecutive victories. That, they have managed to defeat semi finalists Punjab on 3 occasions is bound to give them the confidence that is vital to face the Royals. And luckily for them, Smith is out of the final eleven for the Royals. That ought to be enough to raise the spirits of the CSK. MSD would be looking for a repeat of the T20 WC verdict.

Warne’s xi, the underdogs before the tournament began, have had an almost unbelivable run after losing the first match. Fittingly, they have been christened Royals. Warne’s brilliance and timely contributions by their overseas players and the consistency of the local lads have helped them to top the table. The only team without a coach, Rajasthan has lived off Warne’s experience and his captaincy.

They have found many stars enroute to the final. The Captain is as good as the team they say. Whoever Warne turns to has responded well and that reflects on their position in the table. Swapnil, Pathan, Trivedi, Jadeja have all been revelations in this series. Watson and Tanvir have taken it upon themselves to provide the early breakthroughs and Munaf has been stingy throughout. The team is bound to miss Smith in this crunch game. With the purple cap holder, and one of the best all rounders in the team, along with Warne who always seems to pull a rabbit out of a hat, the Royals seem to be the best bet for the crown.

The two semi finals have been a dampener and the Finals will have to be the red cherry for this superb series. When the current best captain of India takes on the wizard of spin, sparks are bound to fly. May the best captain win and hopefully it is an Indian.

Here we are at the business end of the IPL and the only one thing that would bother the CSK captain, MSD would be Marsh, Shaun Marsh. Little did Preity Zinta know that she had struck gold in selecting this previously unknown OZ. Shaun ‘consistent’ Marsh, the unstoppable Juggernaut, an alien about a month ago has become the house hold name of every Punjabi and the toast of the state. Reputations don’t seem to matter to him; Pace doesn’t seem to bother him. His rule book is small – just send the ball to the cleaners. That, more or less, seems to be the motive of this yet another Australian domestic creation.

Seldom have players achieved such a degree of consistency, like that of Marsh. Runs seem to be a cake walk; boundaries are as easy as falling off a log. With a whip lash pull and a flowing drive, Marsh is all set to take the cricketing world by storm. I wonder how the OZs manage to keep generating great players while the Indians have been relying on their awesome threesome for more than a decade now.

Most overseas players struggle to get bat onto ball in the sub continent. But here is a lad who has fit into the scheme of things as smooth as a sword fits into a scabbard. A quick runner between the wickets, Marsh has had various opening partners already. But understanding his partner of the hour seems to be no problem for him. What makes it heartening is the fact that he amasses the runs with shots straight out of the book. There is no slog element in his approach and amidst all this he maintains a superb strike rate as well.

He has a wide range of shots in his repertoire, the cover drive, the pull, the cut, the flick, the sweep. You name it, he has it (The French cut seems to be the only shot that has eluded this versatile youngster) He is equally strong off the back foot and the front foot and likes to play in the V. Holes in his armor haven’t been discovered yet.

Hmm if only, MSD had a genie. No prizes for guessing what his first wish would be. But can even a genie stop this rampant run machine. (When even guys like McGrath n Warne haven’t been successful) MSD might just be thinking, it’s time to stop planning and start praying. When Marsh is in this kind of form, God alone can stop him.

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM – ACTION X 2

Think about the Forbidden Kingdom and you are immediately blown away by the cast. Bringing two of the best in the business together provides the best recipe for a box office hit. It is a double treat for action buffs as they get twice the value for their money. A drunken master and the One – what more do you need in an action flick. In that perspective, Forbidden Kingdom should be dynamite. Bringing two martial arts icons together to share screen space must have been a complicated venture and kudos to the man at the helm for being able to do just that.

Jackie Chan and Jet Li are two of the most loved and revered action heroes in the subcontinent. The fans would be eager to watch the final show down between their idols. Chan meets Li. That encounter should be worth a watch, a mouthwatering treat indeed.

Forbidden Kingdom, though, centers around Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano), a young man who is sent on a quest to fulfill a prophecy. He has to free the Monkey King, who is held captive by the Jade Emperor. Jason is helped by Chan, as Lu Yan, who is a master of the drunken fight. Jason also seeks the help of a young girl played by Liu Yifei, who is also a victim of the Jade Emperor’s cruelty. Her parents had been killed by the Emperor. Jet li also enters as a monk.

The movie seems to have various scenes that prove to be a reminiscence of legendary movies like Enter the Dragon, Shaolin Temple etc. Jackie Chan is bound to tickle the audience and produce a laugh or two, in addition to his unbelievable stunts. Fight scenes should not have been a problem for the Director though the movie is expected to feature some mind blowing Kung Fu action. The Forbidden Kingdom might just be the enchanting Forbidden Fruit for action lovers. Twice the action, twice the fun.

At one stage, the Don makes Arjun an undeniable offer promising money with no boundaries. What Arjun does finally to save his love life and how he deals the Mafia and the omnipresent police men forms the rest of the tale.

Emraan as Arjun fits the bill in a refreshingly different role. But one feels that the role could have been done with more suave and style. The movie mixes cricket footage to pep up the audience and deals reasonably well with the often complicated human relationship. The movie is picking up inspite of some discouraging reports. It has been reported that the collection on the first day was around 90 percent all over India. So things are looking up for Mukesh Bhatt.

Let me give you a precise description of director Axel Sand’s movie ‘Final contract’ - A car chase, a speed boat chase, and more car chases. That is what Final Contract is all about. Yet another movie with a flimsy storyline, the Final Contract uses the story only to lead you to more vehicle stunts.

The storyline is pretty simple and definitely provides a lot of scope for gripping action. David Glover, played by Drew Fuller, is a courier at the ‘Berlin Express’. As usual, the hero needs to have a crush to share screen space with him in the initial parts of the movie and here it is Jenny played by Tanja Wenzel. Enter the criminal - Lara (Alison King) who claims to be a police woman hitch hikes along with David in his car, during a routine job. The stage is set for the umpteen numbers of chases to begin. (The name rings a bell doesn't it? This character does bear a resemblance to Lara Croft of the Tomb Raiders. Well the Director doesn’t seem to mind.)

Lara turns out to be a professional Killer who is gunning for three witnesses to a murder. She frames David for a killing. The rest is a cliché. David has to escape the clutches of the Police and prove his innocence by trapping the real culprit. No prizes for guessing what the climax could be – not another chase of course? The movie has a number of holes, but the stunt sequences might just make you forget those. After all, the story is for the stunts and stunts alone. The stunts might hold you at the edge of the seat, but the movie fails to make a lasting impression. If you eat and dream about reckless driving, then the movie is your haven. A tip to the audience – please don’t search for any logic. It is way far off. Just watch this for some light hearted fun and for the chase, of course.

Only, I won’t be coming to the class room till the headmasters rules are understood by me”. Speed Racer is back now, on the big screen, with some high octane stuff. Speed Racer starring Emile Hirsch, is a movie for the young and for those who love fast paced action and less logic.

Speed Racer is a teenager who lives and breathes racing. He is quite at home with race cars and drives the Mach 5 which was designed by pops himself. His ambition is to win the Crucible which is a cross country marathon race, which consumed his brother Rex’s life, who was a top notch racer himself. Speed’s fearlessness and instincts soon become the talking point of the circuits and Royalton industries provide a lucrative offer which he refuses. He also unveils that races are being fixed, and Royalton is also involved in such stuff. Now Royalton Industries is gunning for him and wants to ensure that he loses.

‘Speed Racer’ has the perfect ingredients for a pacy treat. With a cool car and twisted and weird circuits, the movie must have kept you at the edge of the seat for most parts of the race. But the amount of flashy colors used make you want the ride to stop before time out. Too much eye candy stuff sometimes forces the actors to get lost in the splash of colors. The movie would be enjoyed better by the fans of the original cartoon series. Nevertheless it is a colorful ride and is worth watching.

CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - PRINCE CASPIAN

Narnia, the fantasy world is back to entertain kids and adults alike. The sequel to Chronicles of Narnia- The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe, brings the kids who stole your heart, back to Narnia, which is vastly different now. The last part depicted how the kids Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy, along with the majestic Aslan defeat the White witch. The sequel brings them all back and provides a roller coaster ride for kids.

The kids are forced to return to Narnia by Susan’s magic horn, after about a year since their last visit. But what they find is completely different from the Narnia that they were familiar with. About 1300 years had passed since they last visited Narnia and things had changed topsy turvy. Narnia has been conquered by the Telmarines and it is now ruled by the iron hand of the evil King Miraz.

Miraz is the uncle of the exiled Prince Caspian who is the true Heir. Miraz had tried to kill Caspian but he had escaped his evil clutches, and settled in Narnia with the other creatures who live in hiding. Prince Caspian had blown the horn during a battle against a siege of Narnia. The kids who are actually the rulers of Narnia have to help Caspian to reclaim the throne and then find their way back home. Easier said than done.

The movie brings in even better special effects and is a bit darker compared to its prequel. It involves more action and drama. Director Andrew Adamson has once again created a movie with all the essential ingredients for a box office hit.

IRON MAN – MUST WATCH

Yet another super hero? Naah! If this was your opinion about the new box office Bomber ‘IRON MAN’, then I would definitely insist you to watch the movie before taking a stance. The special effects are mind blowing and the lead characters play their roles to perfection. With a decent story line and a perfect mix of comedy, Iron Man is worth the ticket.

The story revolves around Tony Stark who is a playboy and a genius. (A rare mix definitely). He creates a new missile and during the demo in Afghanistan, he is captured and suffers a deadly injury. He is forced by his captors to build a missile. But he cleverly builds an armored suit which helps him to escape. Then he begins work on a new armored suit. He discovers that Obadiah Shane of Stark industries had been selling the weapons to miscreants. How he destroys those weapons and deals with Shane forms the remaining portion of this intriguing story.

Robert Downey plays the lead role and delivers a commendable performance. Though, not a big name in the industry, Downey delivers the perfect characterization and it becomes hard to imagine anyone else for the lead role. It is to be appreciated that the producers have gone on with a lead character aged 40, instead of any handsome hunks, as the story line demands such a role. The effects are superb and the comedy lines do not lead you off the track. The suit grabs your attention as attention has been given to every detail and is quite realistic.

Overall Iron man is just the kind of movie, to rake in a huge collection at the box office and is definitely a must watch. It is definitely one of the best super hero genre movies that has come by so far and is worth every penny that you pay to watch it..

IPL DEBATE: GOLDEN OLDIES TAKE POLE POSITION

Experience versus youth! Which way must the pendulum swing? Are the experienced, too slow to keep up with the rapid changes in Cricket? Will the youth be able to bear the pressures and emotions? This debate could go on till the biblical Apocalypse
But at the IPL however, this debate has been put to rest thanks to some stellar performances from the golden oldies. Be it the rampant Shoaib Akhtar who trampled the Delhi dare Devils, or the seemingly ever youthful Hayden, or Mr. Cricket, Hussey, it has been the battle worn elders who have set the stone rolling. There is nothing much to say about Warne and McGrath except that they are still the best in the world (yawn! What’s new?)

Pollock continues to be menacing and Murali continues to mesmerize. Gilly is the same old Dynamite and Symmo is still the power pack and continues to haunt bowlers (For a change he was haunted by other batsmen when he was bowling. Remember the mauling that he suffered from Warne?). Jayasuriya continues his uncanny routine of flicking good length deliveries for sixes and is yet to give up his habit of losing a lot of balls. Sourav seems to be sprouting up some gray hairs but shrugs them off while creating room to hammer the ball to the stands and I could go on endlessly.

The debate has definitely been silenced for the moment by the stalwarts of the game and the fact that all centuries have come from these golden oldies (except for McCullum’s block buster of course.) is proof that the youngsters are yet to clamber up to the winning side of the battle. Hopefully they will make me eat my words soon.

It’s the halfway stage in the IPL and already the Royal Challengers are under fire from the King of Good Times. Mallya has been nipping at the heels of the players for sometime now and the sacking of Charu Sharma and the attack on Dravid have added fuel to the fire. The blame games have begun and unfortunately the Wall has been in the midst of it all. But was Dravid wrong in his selection? Lets just reflect on the team selection.

Focus on the bowling dept. first as the bowlers are the ones who are making the mark nowadays. RC definitely have teeth in their attack. The pace and incisiveness of Steyn, the experience of Zaheer and the guile of Kumble – the trio do form a deadly triplet. Add to that the youthful exuberance of Praveen Kumar and the medium pace of Kallis, then you might almost term it as a threatening attack with no lack of variety.

Shifting focus to the batting dept,- well it definitely doesn’t dazzle but has the essential components to make a mark. Mark Boucher and Misbah ul Haq are two of the cleanest strikers of the cricket ball in contemporary cricket. T20 is not always about flash and bang and Dravid and Kallis could play the second fiddle to perfection. Chanderpaul with his prominent shuffling around the wickets could upset the line and length of any bowler ( of course Warne and Mc Grath are exceptions to this ). Add to this the hard hitting capabilities of Praveen Kumar, a cool head in Virat Kohli, the batting looks to be in safe hands though not exactly dynamite.

If everyone had chipped in with their bit, the team could have easily reached a better standing at the points table. But that’s the way the game goes. You cant always win and you cant always explain why you lose. This is the golden rule in cricket and when one loses then scapegoats are searched for and unfortunately it is Rahul this time around.

IPL: INDIANS YET TO STRIKE IT RICH

Hardly a week old and already the IPL has acquired a huge fan following worldwide. The extravaganza has drawn fans galore; be it the cricket crazy Indians or foreigners, be it male or female, young or the old. The IPL has definitely succeeded in bringing audience in masses to the stadiums. Families who have been thronging the malls and multiplexes have been attracted towards the stadiums. The IPL games are perceived as family outings. The Indian board has definitely struck bulls eye and has turned the attention of the world towards cricket.

But it is not all roses for the fans. What is a bit distressing is that the Indian players are yet to come to the party. There have been no stellar performances from the Indians so far. It has been the OZs who have been hogging the lime light in the IPL’s inaugural week. Be it the consistent McGrath, or the mesmerizing Warne, the effervescent Hussey, or the emerging Hopes, it has been the OZs who have saved the day for their respective teams. More distressing is the fact that, all the team captains are yet to live up to their names. The likes of Dhoni, Sourav, Sehwag, Laxman, Rahul are yet to impress. Yuvi managed a decent outing against the Royals. It is expected that these prolific players will come to the party soon otherwise the IPL might lose its place in the fan’s heart.

It has been a week of frenzy, excitement, hype and every other sophisticated word that is synonymous with exciting. The IPL definitely has gone a long way in changing the face of the game. But is it a change for the better? - A question that definitely needs to be pondered before adding laurel after laurel to the BCCI.

There is always the omnipresent puzzle about whether T20 is good for the interests of the game. At a stage where organizers worldwide have been trying to extend the time that the game is on air on TV, the game of Cricket has been looking to shorten itself. Its all for the betterment of the game say many. But the purists are of a different opinion, of course.

Moreover the IPL has added value to entertainment features other than the game itself. Cricket has definitely taken a back seat. Dare Devil stunts, concerts, celebrities, ads galore- all this provides a false impression as if they are efforts to keep up a dying game. But that is not the state is it? Cricket is definitely live and kicking. One doesn’t need to look beyond the series down under.

Has cricket become so uninteresting that we require half clad girls dancing around for foot tapping tunes? More than that is this good for the culture of the nation? India has never experienced this before. Is this the right development? Do we need such incursions of foreign traditions?

It seems as though the organizers are desperate to bring crowds to the stadium. But that has definitely never been a problem for India. Over here Cricket is religion and fans throng the grounds wherever their favorite stars are. But Celebrities have lapped it up like never before. Cricket is at the cross roads and the path that we choose will make a lasting impact on the life of the game.

IPL: McCULLUM’S CARNAGE IN THE IPL CARNIVAL

This is it. The gala has begun. On Friday, the 18th of April 08, history was in the making, as the doors of the Chinnaswamy stadium opened to greet the Cricketing world’s youngest child, the IPL. The world came to a grinding halt and a packed stadium and television viewers worldwide were given a visual treat. The inaugural of the IPL was a sight for sore eyes. Dancing girls, musicians, acrobatics and what not. The IPL had a historic opening and one does feel jealous about the Bangaloreans who were able to watch it in close quarters.

Well such an opening definitely raised expectations and the King Khan’s Knight Riders were up to it. A barrage of 6s and 4s followed a s they raked up 222. Mccullum was the Knight in Shinig Armour for the KKR. Seldom has such explosive batting been on display. If someone had doubted about the quality of his bat, they culd be forgiven for it was such an awesome display. The Royal Challengers never challenged Mccullum. The absence of Chris Gayle was not felt which is saying something.

One has to feel for the Royal Challengers as they sorely missed the experience of Kumble and the pace of Steyn. But honestly, Could they have made a difference when McCullum was playing the ‘God’? the King of Good Times would never have dreamt about such a thrashing. If it was McCullum to begin with, it was Ishant and Dinda later in the night, troubling the so called ‘Performers’ with their consistent line and length. The RC were only able to reach half of what McCullum scored.

Even the Gods would not have predicted such a start for the IPL. God save the bowlers as more Blitzkreig is to follow and we are yet to see the likes of Symonds, Sachin, Jayasuriya and Hayden. The organizers could lose too many balls in this tournament.

IPL: FASTEN SEAT BELTS

ICL: A DREAM FINAL

The best advertisement for any sport is the sport itself. In that way, the Indian Cricket League (ICL), received its best advertisement on Sunday. The second final between the Hyderabad Heroes and Lahore Badshahs, turned out to be a cracker of a contest. The ICL seems to have reserved it’s best for the end. A bowl out finish is a dream end (a nightmare for the losers though) to any match and when it comes to the finals, it is even more so. In that way one must admit, the Hyderabadis were lucky to view that game in close quarters, at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium on sunday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Lahore Badshahs were onto a decent start with the score board reading 63 for one in 9 overs. If any of their fans had felt that half the game was won by then, then they were in for a huge surprise. The Lahore Badshahs lost 5 quick wickets for just 35 runs and were staring down the barrel. Finally they fell for a meager 130 – not what they would have wanted in the finals.

Well 130 should have been a cake walk for the Heroes. But that was not to be. The Heroes made mountains out of the mole hill. The opposition bowlers deserve credit. Naved Ul Hasan spearheaded the come back with a 5 wicket haul. AT Rayudu’s effort helped the Heroes scratch their way to a draw. A thrilling end was on the cards. The fates of the teams were now on the bowl out.

What followed was a repeat of the T20 World Cup finals bowl out where the Pakistanis never managed to strike the stumps. Here again Lahore couldn’t get a single strike, while the Heroes managed three to win the finals 3-0. The purpose of the match was served. It was not a win for the Heroes alone. But it was a great victory for the ICL as well. It got the spot light that it deserved. Is ICL going the Kerry Packer way? Time alone will tell.

CRICKET: SPARE A THOUGHT

The Indian Debacle at Motera, left a lot to be desired. The way the famed Indian batting line up collapsed, made one to turn away in disgust. Is this the famous middle order that accumulated records galore? Is it the end of an era of the seniors? Is it time for the seniors to walk away? Has Indian cricket reached back to square one? Will the Indians ever learn the art of consistency? These questions seem to plague every fan’s mind. But it is time that we looked at the bigger picture.

The Indians have been playing intense Cricket continuously for a long period now, since the World cup debacle. From the tour to Ireland, followed by England, South Africa, the T20 extravaganza, the tour to Australia and many more, the Indians have been constantly on the field. Add to that the IPL frenzy. The period that they have been away from Home and family, would have definitely had its effect. Who says that (with due respect) IT professionals are over worked? Spare a thought for our poor heroes.

The problems in Australia, only added to the humungous pain in the neck. They did show great resolve and determination when they were in Australia. Then, they were the toast of the nation. But two matches hence, they are considered a poor team. Is that right on our part? The Indian fans must restrain themselves. Failures are bound to happen.

Yes the debacle in Motera was more than a minor failure. But what do we earn by jumping on the gun? Mindless axing and chopping would only make the situation adverse. Here is a proven bunch of performers; a bunch of batsmen, who haunt bowlers worldwide; a bunch of bowlers who gave the mighty Aussies, nightmares; a bunch that even Ponting and Clarke couldn’t help but praise. India as a nation should be proud of such prolific talent in the team. We are privileged to see these great players on the field. No other team can praise of a Sachin, a Sourav, a wall, a VVS, a Kumble and many more.

The records that have tumbled, the emotions that have flowed, the number of matches that have been played, the adulation and hostility of fans, burn outs and ageing; all affect a player’s performance. But they still continue to bounce back and gag critics. At least for that, if not for anything else, these players deserve any amount of adulation. So stop criticizing; think, and reminisce. Relive all those exciting moments. And finally spare a thought for these over worked players!

YAARADI NEE MOHINI – EXPECTATIONS GALORE

After a successful outing in ‘Polladhavan’, Dhanush is back in ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’, a remake of the telugu super hit, ‘Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule’. Dhanush has had huge successes lately. The greatest plus point for him is that he fits the bill for the ‘Boy next Door’ roles. His blockbusters, ‘Polladhavan’ and ‘Thiruvilayadal’ stand testimony to this statement. But with huge successes come huge expectations. Dhanush has to be wary of that.

‘Yaaradi … ‘, is a movie which is right up the lane for Dhanush. He plays a middle class teenager, in search of employment which eludes him due to his poor communication skills. He is constantly pricked by his father, Raghuvaran. Finally he gets employed in a software firm. He falls in love with Keerthi (Nayanthara) who works in the same firm. But the love turns to be one sided as she doesn’t reciprocate his love and is engaged to another person. His life turns from bad to worse following this. How Dhanush deals with his crumbling life forms the remainder of this absorbing tale.

The movie is expected to take the box office by storm. The music is already a hit and the film is expected to take the same path. ‘Yaaradi nee Mohini’, could be the next biggie for the boy next door.

The one and only super star of Tamil Cinema, Rajni Kanth has earned himself a new fan. Only this time the fan is from abroad and he is known for his scorching bouncers. South African ace pacer, Makhaya Ntini, is the most recent person to enter his list of admirers.

Makhaya Ntini, who was recently in Chennai for the test match between India and South Africa, revealed his obsession to Rajni Kanth’s movies. Ntini like millions in India, was bowled over by the super star’s style. Ntini was very impressed by the movie Baba and he often demonstrates Rajni Kanth’s style in the movie with his fingers. He revealed that he had watched Baba a number of times. He also surprised media persons by imitating the super star using his dialogue 'Peraketaale Summa Adirudilla' which featured in the super star’s last movie ‘Sivaji’.

THE WALL STILL STANDS TALL

These are not great times for the seniors in the Indian team. Each and every action of theirs is questioned. Their achievements are ignored. Not a day passes by without debating about their place in the side. Rahul Dravid is no exception. The number of matches that he has turned around for India are forgotten. His great knocks are things of the past.

Amidst all this high pressure, Dravid chose another occasion to prove himself yet again (actually he has nothing to prove to anyone except to himself). The wall entered an elite club. He is one of the very few to cross 10000 runs. Dravid is one of the most unsung heroes of Indian cricket. His achievements have been over shadowed by his team mates. Even when he plays a huge knock, he doesn’t get much of the credit.

One of those instances is when Laxman notched up the legendary 281 against the Aussies. Dravid played a tremendous knock in that match. Unfortunately it was Laxman’s name that lasted. There are many such instances when he played along with Sachin, Sourav and recently with Sehwag. This time his century knock was over shadowed by Sehwag’s triple ton. True this century was not his best. He has not been in the best of form lately. The wall has developed some cracks.

But no one can deny that he was a team man to the core. He always took added responsibilities. Doubling up as keeper during the 2003 World Cup was a crucial role which helped restore balance to the team. He was ready to open the innings in test matches even as two of the greatest openers ever were hesitant to move up from the middle order. He shuffled himself up and down the batting order in ODIs for the team’s cause. This eventually left him unsettled and contributed to his downfall in ODIs. But amidst all that he never once complained. He faced critics with unflinching courage and continues to do so.

The man definitely deserves praise. But have we given him his due?

A DARE DEVIL BECOMES CHENNAI’S SUPER KING

A hot Friday in Chennai witnessed a hurt man’s retort. The whirl wind knock of come back man Virender Sehwag, the captain of Delhi Dare Devils, left both his critics and fans breathless – an effort which could remain unparalleled for long.

Dropped from the team for the series in Australia, Viru was in the wilderness for some time. The days spent out of the team must have been like hell for the swashbuckling batsman. Given an opportunity to play in Australia, thanks to Gambhir’s injury, Sehwag gave vent to his feelings with a match saving century at Adelaide. But soon his under performance in the one day arena gave way for youngsters to enter the team. Once again Viru found himself in familiar circumstances. His reply was strong. Too strong. Unfortunately the South Africans had to face his wrath.

Viru was at his destructive best in the first test. His burning desire to prove himself yet again was obvious for everyone to see. His demoralizing knock was an important factor as the South African pacers had come to India with their tails up after a superb season. Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn were smashed to the ropes with ease. The less said about the other bowlers, the better. Harris had to resort to a negative line. But that made no difference. It was a dominating performance overall. Delhi’s Dare Devil reigned supreme as Chennai’s Super King.

Viru is known for his big knocks. His approach is simple. It is his simplicity which helps him post such big scores. The pitch is of no concern. He is not intimidated by the reputations of bowlers. He plays the ball in its merit. When there is a ball to be hit he hits it. When he flashes he flashes hard. Simple yet effective, considering his stats. His only problem is his consistency. But he deserves his place just because of the fact that he wins atleast one match in a series for his team.

SEHWAG’S BLITZ KREIG IN CHENNAI

A flat pitch, a hot day and a marauder brought the South African attack to their knees – a virtually demoralizing experience for the bowlers. The Nawab of Najafgarh was back to what he does best – tearing attacks apart. Sehwag completed another triple ton, his previous one against Pakistan, on a perfect batting pitch on the third day of the first test in Chennai. His mind blowing innings helped India to inch closer to what was supposed to be a mammoth first innings total of 540.

The third day of the first test was no different from the first two days. The pitch continued to remain a grave yard for bowlers. Bowlers like Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn were made to look like gully cricketers as Sehwag made most of the opportunity that came his way. Viru continued from where he left on the second day in the same swashbuckling fashion. Runs were coming in leaps and bounds and the South African skipper, Smith ran out of ideas. At the other end though the runs dried up as Jaffer followed by Dravid were content to defend.

Dravid especially was too slow to start with even for test cricket his 50 coming off 151 balls. But later he began to play some exquisite drives bringing back memories of his fluent knocks in the past. But the whole day belonged to Viru as he went on to make mince meat of a good bowling attack. Sehwag took just 78 balls for his second hundred, and 84 for the third. Viru’s liking for hitting sixes were obvious with the way he hit Ntini for a huge one to reach 199, and soon lofting Harris straight down the ground to reach 297. There were three more towering hits in his innings studded with 42 fours. In the process Viru became the fastest player to reach a triple ton.

Viru would have his eyes firmly on the 400 run mark and Lara’s record score. The way the pitch is playing, only a miracle could save the SA bowlers tomorrow. Many including me felt that SA’s mammoth score could be insufficient on this pitch and the day’s proceedings seem to suggest the same. God! Save test cricket and the bowlers!

D-WAR – FOR THE ACTION BUFF

Dragon War : D-War is all set to hit the screens in tamil nadu dubbed as Rudra Nagam. The Japanese monster movie is expected to be a fast paced action packed thriller – a treat for the action lover.

The story is highly imaginative and the audience is expected to absorb the incredibility of the tale with some sense of humour. Very long ago in Korea, there were giant serpents called Imoogi. But there was a bad one, Baruki in their midst who gathered some troops. A girl named Narin had an odd glowing bubble which turns the Imoogi into dragons. The girl and her lover Harem sacrifice themselves for the bubble. But they are re born in Los Angeles and Baruki is back. The sequence of events that follow provide edge of the seat action.

The movie is expected to feature some enticing cinematography with large monsters ala Godzilla and Anaconda. The henchmen of Buraki seem to resemble Sauron’s henchmen in the ‘Lord of the Rings’. But the similarities end there.

Overall the movie is a treat for people who have missed Japanese movies for long. Action buffs, fasten your seat belts. This is going to be one bumpy ride.

SA DRAWS FIRST BLOOD

The first test between India and South Africa, has had a boring start thanks to the curators. The Chennai pitch has no juice in it and the match threatens to be heading towards a tame draw unless the pitch wears off a lot.

The second day of the first test saw South Africa continue the run feast. The visitors were never troubled by the bowlers and the pitch. Centurion Hashim Amla definitely wouldn’t rate this innings as his best as he never had to fight for runs. The Indian bowling attack which brought the mighty Aussies onto their knees not very long ago, seemed tired. The pacers could not muster anything off the pitch and the spinners were helpless too. It is pitches like this that aid to the downfall of Test Cricket.

Wicket keeper Mark Boucher also came to the party with a fluent knock of 70. Morkel too added fuel to the fire with a gritty 35. But the Indians managed to knock off the tail without giving much runs, for a change. Harbhajan Singh did his reputation no harm, with a five wicket haul under testing weather conditions. The South African rampage was brought to a halt finally at a score of 540 – massive, except that even this total could prove insufficient on this belter of a pitch.

It was time for the Indians to have their say and Viru and Jaffer went about their business in style. Viru was back to his plundering ways and notched up a quickfire 50. Jaffer’s brisk start didn’t continue for long. He was back to his defensive best towards the fag end of the day. The onus is on India to make this match lively. If they could step up the pace and get a sizable lead, then the SA players will have to face the music from our spinners on the fourth and fifth day. But the Indians currently have to play catch up.

BIG B IS BACK AT THE HELM

Bollywood’s oldest and most charming hero is back to mesmerize us with his on screen antics. The Big B’s new movie ‘Bhootnath’ is all set to enthrall the audience soon. ‘Bhootnath’ is a story for all classes of audience. Yes the story involves a ghost. No prizes for guessing. The main story line comprises of a budding friendship between a mischievous kid and a ghost.

Banku, a young kid along with his family moves into a new house which is already an abode for a ghost. The ghost is unhappy with the new inmates. But unexpectedly, friendship blossoms between the boy and the ghost. How the boy helps the Ghost to attain salvation, forms the remaining part of the engrossing story. Definitely no prizes for guessing who the ghost is. The movie stills says it all.

Directed by Vivek Sharma, the movie has created a lot of expectations, what with king Khan sharing some screen space with a cameo role in the movie. Juhi Chawla and Rajpal Yadav are the other artists to feature in the movie. The movie is expected to be released worldwide in the month of may.

TRESCOTHICK ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

The English cricket Board suffered a big disappointment on Saturday. Marcus Trescothick, one of the best English openers ever, announced his premature retirement from all forms of International Cricket. This comes as a big blow to the English fans, as the team is suffering from a lack of balance in its batting line up.

Trescothick has not been involved in onfield action for a while now. He has suffered from a stress-related illness for about two years now and he confessed on Saturday, that he could not return to the high-pressure world of international cricket. In his, not so long a career, Trescothick has amassed 5825 runs in 76 test matches with 14 centuries. In the one day arena he stands as the second highest scorer for England with 4335 runs in 123 matches.

The problems started when he pulled out of England’s tour to India in 2006 and later he missed the Champions Trophy. That was only the beginning. Soon it was clear that he might not be able to participate in overseas tours. But his value in the team was there for everyone to see. England captain, Michael Vaughan, said, "On behalf of all the England players, I would like to thank Marcus for his contribution to the team. He has been an outstanding player for England in both forms of the game”..

Trescothick commented that, "My desire to play cricket is as strong as it ever was. But, due to the problems that I have experienced, travelling abroad has become extremely stressful for me. I now think that it is in the best interests of all concerned that the issue is put to rest so that the England team can concentrate on moving forward, and I can concentrate all my efforts on playing well for Somerset."

The Asian action figure has been seen lately in some comical movies which were not as action packed as his earlier ventures. But on this occasion the new release promises to be pacy n action filled.

Jackie Chan plays a super cop with the HongKong Police. Fung ( Nicholas Tse) is a teenager who wants to become a detective like Wing (Jackie). But he fails to become one, because of his wretched background. Meanwhile Jackie falls into a trap when he tracks down a gang who were killing cops at will. Jackie falls into alcoholism and suffers miserably. Fung finds Jackie and becomes his partner and Jackie gets back onto the trail of those dangerous criminals. Whether Jackie succeeds in his venture forms the remaining part of the story.

The movie is definitely one for the action lover. Will Jackie redo his magic at the box office yet again? Hopefully he will

‘ANJATHEY’ ROCKS BOX OFFICE

Mysskin’s magnificient creation ‘Anjathey’ is currently ruling the roost at the box office. The film has been a mass hit catering to audiences of all classes. Packed halls and whistling fans seem to greet every show of the movie. The director has definitely carved a niche for himself in Kollywood’s tinsel town. Even the songs in the movie, though few in number, have been great hits.

Rarely has a movie been so gripping and engaging as ‘Anjathey’ has been. The director has understood the pulse of the audience and has delivered one of the best entertainers ever. Though the movie is a tad too long ( a few minutes more than 3 hours ), one is never tired of watching it. The only bug was the climax which was, I have to confess, a bit of a drag. But there was no other way that the story could end.

Cinematographer Muthuswamy deserves all the credits that he gets. The movie features some mind boggling angles and that adds to the joy of the viewer. The very first scene of the movie bears testimony to what is being referred here. In some scenes you get to see only the feet of the actors which adds to the thrill. The movie stands out from the redundant commercial masalas, that are on offer nowadays. The movie has style in a subtle fashion.

Though the movie features few songs, they have been outstanding and all of them blend with the story line which is a relief. Sundar C Babu keeps us at the edge of our seats with his background music. Each and every actor turned in a creditable performance. Of course Prasanna and Narain stand out. But even other actors like MS Bhaskar, Pandiarajan manage to impress.

‘Anjathey’ is definitely a must watch. Hats off to Mysskin and crew.

IPL : BANGALORE ROYAL CHALLENGERS LAUNCHED

Following Kolkatta, the Bangalore franchise of the IPL was formally launched on Wednesday. Vijay Mallya, the owner of the franchise was present for the launch along with the team mates and captain, Rahul Dravid. The team’s jersey was a mix of red and yellow and the team did look sparkling in them.

Earlier Vijay Mallya and Rahul Dravid were criticized for selecting players who are not well known for quick fire knocks. But addressing the media on Wednesday, Dravid reiterated that they wanted performers rather than stars. They wanted people who believed in the concept of a team.

Meanwhile the team’s chief cricket officer Martin Crowe expressed the team’s burning desire to be the inaugural winners of the IPL. He added that the team had a mix of people with integrity and humility. He also stressed on the fact that T20 was not all smash and bang. Vijay Mallya would be hoping that what Crowe said is true.

Bollywood super star Sharukh Khan along with the prince of Kolkatta christened the Kolkatta team for the IPL on Tuesday. The Kolkatta IPL team will be hereby known as the ‘KOLKATTA KNIGHT RIDERS’ – a worthy name considering the knightly players in their rankings.

The Kolkatta Knight Riders, with powerful hitters like Brendon Mccullum, Chris Gayle, Ponting and the Prince himself, pose a serious challenge to all other IPL teams and is a serious contender for the cup. The team’s theme song reflects the mood in the camp. "Korbo, Lorbo, Jitbo" (We will do it, fight it and win it) is what they chant.

The colour of their jerseys says it all. The black and Gold jersey that was unveiled reflects the Goddess Kali (black), also a symbol of Kolkatta and the Gold is what they are aiming for. King Khan is currently on cloud nine and it would be upto the Knight riders to ensure that he is not given a rude wake up call.

The frenzy surrounding the IPL biddings have hardly died down. But the next round of the biddings is about to begin. The owners of the IPL teams are getting ready for the battle royale where the teams would look to improve their strength. Already the teams like the Chennai Super Kings, kolkatta team and the Hyderabad team have a well stocked line up and it would be interesting to see the players that they would target. But it is not going to be easy for these owners as they do not have much money in their kitty.

NO DEBATES PLEASE – SACHIN IS THE BEST

Critics wrote him off. Fans were never satisfied. The Coach questioned his commitment while cricket experts found chinks in his armour. The little master bore them all without flinching. It was time for his reply and reply he did, in his own inimitable style. Yes, Sachin Tendulkar was in his element and weaved his magic yet again under a starry sky at the SCG.

Yes, it was not the usual Sachin knock. It might not feature in his top 5 knocks. It definitely didn’t have the trademark thundering drives and the pounding cuts. Neither did he manage to clear the ropes frequently. But it was a knock oozing with determination and grit. Sachin was out to prove a point though actually he had nothing much to prove. And when Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar raised his bat to acknowledge the cheers of the crowd, it was not pride and joy that were visible in his eyes. Instead it were the hurts and wounds that he had been forced to endure that were visible.

Sachin is one of those unfortunate excessively gifted men whose every action is scrutinized and non existent faults found. Every failure of his is discussed as if its the end of the world. In every outing of his, critics and fans alike, try very hard to find some thing to bicker about. Very recently it revolved around the so called ‘Nervous 90s’ problem of his. Instead of acknowledging a great innings of 90 runs people tend to speak only about the missing 10 runs. Instead of acknowledging the numerous centuries he has crafted, people tend to speak about his coincidental poor run in the finals. But who was the primary reason for reaching umpteen number of finals? Sachin ofcourse. But no one cares as long as they get some thing to criticize about him.

Never before in history has a man been so borne down with expectations as Sachin has been. For that alone (if not for anything else) he deserves the tag of the ‘Best Batsman’. Yes Brian Lara was a contemporary great batsman and carried the Winidies expectations. But please, their population wouldn’t match that of a single state in our country. Yes Ponting amasses a lot of runs aggressively. But he always had good players to rely on even if his fails. But was it the case with Sachin? In the early 1990s the whole Indian team was a one man army. Teams planned ways to get him out in vain. Bowlers fear him worldwide. Yet we fail to realize the kind of star that he is.

Come on! Reflect on his achievements. Reflect on things that he has done which others could only stare at in awe. It is about time that we Indians respect his deeds rather than criticize his rare failures. Critics must reflect on their own achievements before questioning his credentials. And the only one who has better credentials than him is God and of course the legendary Don Bradman. So stop pointing fingers at him ‘cause it would be a sin. Enjoy the master’s innings ‘cause soon we might miss him. Yes , if Cricket is religion, Sachin is definitely the God and do your sins while Sachin is batting ‘cause God will not be watching you. He will be watching Sachin dispatch the ball to the cleaners.

A splendid unbeaten century by the little master has lifted india to a six-wicket win over the aussies in the first of the three finals of the CB series. sachin's unbeaten 117 first against australia in australia has helped india to beat aussies by 6 WKTs.
After the bowlers did a good job of restricting Australia to 239 for eight wickets,Tendulkar (120 balls, 10x4s) guided India to 242 for four in 45.5 overs, to win with 25 balls to spare. Tendulkar was adjudged the Man of the Match. Rohit Sharma was the other main contributor in the Indian innings with a fine 66 (87 balls, 6x4s).
Australia now have a huge task to win the second final at the Gabba in Brisbane Tuesday.

History At Kuala Lumpur

India's victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground were repeated at the lesser known Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur, where India won the Under-19 World Cup after playing out a thriller in the final against South Africa by 12 runs. Great scenes of celebrations by the Indians, players hugging each other. The coach, Dave Whatmore is as excited as the players, wonderful stuff. On the other side we can see the forlorn faces of the South African players but they should not be disappointed they have done well
South Africa were on the backfoot from the beginning, losing three wickets quickly and then the storm came down and when the match resumed again, South Africa required 116 to win in 25 overs as per D/L method, they still needed to score 99 runs from 98 deliveries. Though India put down a number of chances, they held on to their nerves to pull of a great win. India Under-19s are the World Cup Champions of 2008.

PROBLEMS GALORE FOR JODHAA AKBAR

Akbar seems to be facing so many problems recently. The Hrithik Roshan – Ash starrer Jodhaa Akbar was expected to take the box office by a storm. But it has been in the news lately for some unwanted reasons. Only recently the movie was picking up at the box office. But now it faces another road block. This time the movie has been banned in Uttar Pradesh fearing a ‘breach of peace’ as quoted by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Only very recently the screening of the movie restarted in Madhya Pradesh after the court ordered the Government to lift the ban on the movie on tuesday. But the happiness for the producer was short lived as the movie was banned in Uttar Pradesh even though there has not been many protests for the movie in that state. Jodhaa Akbar will have to overcome all odds if it has to reap a profit.

INDIA STUMBLES TO THE U-19 WORLD CUP FINALS

It has been a great week for Indian cricket ( except for the Hayden-Bhajji incident ofcourse ). The Indian team has qualified for the finals of the CB series while the colts are on the verge of creating history. The under 19 team India managed to beat the Kiwis in the semifinals ( though not comprehensively ). India would play the winner of the South Africa – Pakistan clash in the finals.

India survived some nervous moments during their chase against the Kiwis. This is the first time in this series that India has been tested. ( So far all of its contests have been cake walks ). Chasing 205 for a berth in the final, India was onto a poor start losing Taruwar Kohli early. That’s when rain interrupted and the target was reduced to 191 off 43 overs. Skipper Virat Kohli and Goswami put on 84 for the third wicket. But the chase was not over. India lost wickets regularly and the middle order failed miserably in the acid test. Finally India reached the target with 3 wickets to spare.

Earlier the Kiwis won the toss and chose to bat. But their batsmen couldn’t fire in the crunch situation losing wickets regularly. Pradeep Sangwan could not get among the wickets but he managed to tie the batsmen down. Only Corey Anderson managed to make an impression with a well crafted half century to save Kiwis the blushes. The Kiwis crumbled to 205 off their 50 overs which eventually turned out to be a few runs short.

Definitely a Super Sunday awaits us. Hopefully it would be a historical Sunday for the Indian senior and junior men in blue.

BRAD HOGG RETIRES

Australian spinner Brad Hogg has decided to retire from international cricket at the end of the CommonWealth Bank series. This decision comes right out of the blue and could mean trouble for the australians. The Aussies are already struggling in the absence of legendary spinner Shane Warne in the test arena. Now they have to look for some other option.

Hogg revealed that he had contemplated retirement after Australia’s successful world cup campaign. But the retirement of Shane Warne opened the doors for him in test cricket and that extended his career. Brad Hogg’s decision may come as a surprise to many as he still looks young. But the fact is that he is currently 37. He hasn’t had a long stint in the Australian test side having played only 7 tests and 121 one dayers. These are very small figures considering the amount of cricket that is being played these days. But we may see Hogg in action soon as he has expressed his interest in playing in the Indian T20 leagues.

Hogg was always over shadowed by the seniors in the side like Warne and Mcgill. But in the one day arena he has been a vital cog in the Aussie attack and was a part of the World cup winning Aussie teams in 2003 and 2007. So his retirement would also leave the one day side unbalanced.

The absence of Hogg leaves Australia in dire straits. Who do they turn to now? This is something that the the Aussies have never experienced for long. For long it was the problem of plenty for the Aussies. But now it is not so. Times are definitely changing.

TERMINATOR 4 IN THE MAKING

Great news for Hollywood movie buffs. The Terminator trilogy which entertained fans world wide is all set to captivate fans yet again. The next movie in the series has been dubbed as “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins”. The lead role is to be played by Christian Bale. Shooting is about to begin in Mexico.

The first movie of the saga made the rounds in 1984 which shot Arnold Schwarzenegger to the peaks of fame. The story involved a robot from the future whose mission was to kill Sarah Connor who would be the mother of John Connor. John Connor was supposed to be the future leader of the Human resistance in the war against Robots. The second movie of the series ‘Terminator 2: Judgement day’ released in the early 1990s was the best movie then and bagged many awards. The last movie in the trilogy so far was released in 2003 ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines’ which bagged around $400 million worldwide.

Christian Bale, the actor who played the lead role in the recent block buster ‘Batman begins’ will play the role of John Connor in the movie. The movie would be released in mid 2009.

SPIDEY SHARUKH

King khan is all set to star in what would be his most expensive movie yet. The Bollywood Baadshah is on a roll already with big hits like Chakde India, Om shanti Om, and now he wants to top them all by playing the role of a super hero. SRK has revealed that he is about to do such a role to please his son, Aryan. The super hero that he would depict on the screen is on the lines of the friendly neighborhood Spider man.

SRK has chosen an able Director, Anubhav Sinha for the extravaganza. The director is already famous for his block buster action flicks like ‘Dus’ and ‘Cash’. But this venture could be his greatest challenge ever, what with the huge expectations of the fans weighing down on him. The director is a proud man and is surprised that SRK chose him for the big budget movie. The movie is also about to feature a 12 year old co-star to share screen space with SRK. The lucky kid hasn’t been found yet.

KAMAL HASAN AND MOHANLAL TO ACT TOGETHER

The latest pair of big names to come together was Amithab Bachan pairing with Mammooty in the movie ‘Vande Mataram’. Now two more super heroes have joined the list.

Dr.Kamal Hasan and Malayalam super star Mohanlal have agreed to share the screen in a new Malayalam Movie ‘Kandhahar’. The duo are all set to star in this new flick produced by major Ravi. Major Ravi is known for making films with army themes and this one seems to be on the same lines. The two actors will take on the role of Commandoes whose mission is to save the passengers of a hijacked plane. The story is based on the hijack of the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in the year 1999.

The story line definitely provides scope for nail biting action and with two of the best actors taking part, the movie is expected to be nothing but exceptional.
